Who Are You Becoming?

We’ve talked a little bit in a previous post about investing in yourself financially. But another huge key to growth and leveling up is evaluating who you’re spending most of your time with.

The people we spend time with shape who we are and who we become, overtly or subtly. (It’s why your mom didn’t want you hanging out with “that crowd” in high school.) In fact, there’s a saying in the leadership and personal development space — that “You become the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.”

So who are those 5 people for you? And are you choosing to spend time with them — are they bringing you joy and fulfillment — or is it more of an obligation?

In the picture below are some of the people I choose to surround myself with (literally). These women are POWERHOUSES of innovation, wisdom, and strength. And I’ve found myself better off for having spent time with them. We lift each other up, hold each other accountable, and encourage the best in each other.

Similarly, if you spend a lot of your time with coworkers who are constantly unhappy and complaining about management/work conditions/etc., you might find yourself in a downward spiral toward resentment and negativity. (I’ve been here before myself. It feels good sometimes to complain, but it can also very easily become your lifestyle.)

Now, I’m definitely not going to tell you to ditch your family or friends or coworkers, especially for any strategic or self-serving reason. It’s good to love and stick with the people in your life that you’ve made commitments to.

But if you’d like to branch out a bit more, I’d suggest connecting with people whom you admire — people whose lives and careers you aspire to, or people who embody the values, family life, professionalism, or financial situation you’d like to see for yourself.

You can also take it a step further and start or join a Mastermind group — a small group of driven individuals who support and mentor each other, and help each other answer tough questions.

At the end of the day, YOU get to decide how you spend your time, and who you spend it with. You get to decide who you become.

Words & warmth,

Sarah
