Hello dear friends. 🙂 I have some important news.
Yesterday, a friend alerted me to a Deadline article that very casually mentioned several “podcasts in various stages of development to be adapted [for television, including] sci-fi drama Girl In Space.“
So… yeah! Some of you may know that for the past two years, I’ve been working on a SECRET PROJECT that I have been contractually obligated to NOT talk about. Some of you have guessed what that is, and with the release of this article, I can finally confirm: you were right!
I’m not sure who leaked the info in this article, but I’ve spoken with my agent, and we’re at a point where it’s okay. Here’s the full story about why that is and what’s happening (and what will happen moving forward), with just a few details omitted based on various pending things. (Is that vague enough for you?)
First off, those of you who know me know that I never started the Girl In Space podcast with plans for a TV adaptation in mind — I only wanted to experiment with audio storytelling and tell a fun story with and for my friends and family.
But then this incredible opportunity cropped up — I was unexpectedly approached by agents for representation, they started pitching my show, and then *bam*! we were off to the TV races. I was swept along in this huge, weird wave that I had never intended or even expected.
From there, it was a strange and bumpy road (and it will continue to be strange and bumpy), but my amazing agents over at CAA put Girl In Space in front of some major networks and streaming services. I was able to choose where the GIS TV show would live, which is a huge privilege that I remain grateful for.
Again, out of respect for ongoing things, I can’t tell you where the show landed, but I can tell you I was very pleased with where it ended up. From there, the road became strange and bumpy again as various names were attached and then detached from the production, and as my contract took over a full year to negotiate and sign.
But finally, contracts were signed, the pilot was developed, and we were moving forward. Until… we weren’t anymore.
One of my mentors in the industry told me that, “There are one million reasons your show won’t move forward, and only one of them ever has anything to do with you. The other 999,999 reasons are just Hollywood being Hollywood.”
This was really reassuring news as a massive shakeup and corporate restructuring saw several shows cut from the upcoming slate… including Girl In Space.
It stung at first, and when I got the news, I spent some quality time crying on my couch, and then abruptly doing my 7:00 pm create-along livestream over on Twitch, where I still couldn’t talk about anything. It was very weird.
But this wasn’t my first roadblock, and it won’t be my last. There is a ton of silver lining, and there is still significant interest in a Girl In Space TV show. We’re moving forward today with a phone call about next steps, and in January 2021 things are happening (I’m sorry, I have to be vague again).
In the meantime… well, honestly, this isn’t how I wanted the news to come out. The official press release about an upcoming Girl In Space TV show was going to be issued when the show was in production — so after all the writing and casting was complete — but I never got to share that with you.
It’s weird and uncomfortable that this article came out so soon after my show was cut, after I had alerted my family and Patreon patrons (who have been supporting me throughout this entire ordeal).
But the article is not inaccurate. Girl In Space is still in development for television, and I’m so incredibly excited to be able to share that news with you now after so long. <3
Thank you for your love and support over the past two years, and I look forward to sharing additional news and updates as I’m able. 🙂
Words & warmth,
