“Don’t follow the crowd; let the crowd follow you.”
— Margaret Thatcher
It’s really easy to be a follower. You don’t have to solve anyone else’s problems. You don’t need to carry any responsibility. You don’t need to birth great ideas or pioneer unexplored horizons. You just sort of go with the flow and enjoy good company and a collective sense of risk.
Leading, on the other hand, is hard. You’re responsible for addressing and potentially solving others’ problems. You will be looked to for new ideas. You will need to take risks and pay the price for any mistakes or poor decisions. You will be criticized, and you will be blamed.
So why would anyone ever willingly lead?
Because it’s the leaders who forge the paths into where we’re going next. It’s the leaders who affect personal, local, and societal change. It’s the leaders who set the example for how to be bold and brave. It’s the leaders who history remembers.
As a creator, whether you feel like it or not, you have the opportunity to be a leader. In fact, by publishing your work, you already are.
Publishing brings visibility, and visibility brings power.
How can you more fully take on the role of leader? How can you be a good one?
And… are you willing to?
Words & warmth,
Sarah
