These books changed my life.

Did you know that, in addition to being a podcast fanatic, I am also an avid reader of the printed word?

… Well, okay, if you know ANYTHING about me, you probably knew that already. And there’s nothing I loooove more than giving good book recommendations — not just “Here’s what I’m reading right now,” but “OH MY GOSH THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE.”

Now, I’ve learned the majority of what I know about podcasting from online articles, videos, tweets, and, of course, my own experience. But a lot of the best advice I’ve received on creating, marketing, and living fully into my show has come from non-podcasting-related books!

Here are a few of my favorites to start you off:

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

This book taught me that it is possible to live in a constant state of creativity — and how we’re better off for it. You may also enjoy the author’s TED talk on creativity — it’s one of my faves.

Show Your Work! by Austin Kleon

This quick, fun read explores how you can get discovered as an artist (or a podcaster!) by being open and honest about your own creative process.

The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks

This book helped me transition out of my day job and into full-time podcasting! It’s great for anyone looking to understand and overcome whatever is holding them back.

Finish by Jon Acuff

I read Finish while struggling through the eight-month process of creating the Girl In Space Season One finale. If you’re looking for a book to call you out and kick your old habits of not finishing what you start to the curb… this is it.

What About You?

It was really hard to keep this list to just four books — and if you’d like more recommendations, just let me know! You can find me on Goodreads, Instagram, or right here on my blog.

What books have helped YOU become a better podcaster? Or — even better — what should I read next?

Words & warmth,

Sarah
