I’ve spoken before on this show about the effects of imposter syndrome, a.k.a feeling like a fraud. But how do you actually feel about yourself? Do you truly believe you are a writer? Does it seem too easy (or too impossible) to just say that out loud? What do you have to prove to yourself or others before you start taking yourself seriously?
As if doubting our own work wasn’t enough, most writers also doubt themselves. But a little positivity can go a long way. And intentional, daily affirmation can help free us from our worst enemies… ourselves.

Who Do You Think You Are?
As creators, we are often our own harshest critics. Even other people’s positive affirmations don’t always stick, because we think we know better than them. And we don’t always think very highly of ourselves.
Other times, we feel like we must first obtain the recognition of someone “greater” or “more valuable” than us before we can believe our own worth. But only you get to decide who you are as well as what you can or cannot do. Someone else’s system of validation does not define you. And nobody can take away the identity you establish for yourself.
When we disbelieve our own truth, we trap ourselves in a mindset problem of limiting beliefs. That’s why it’s so important for all creators to train their brains to be loving, kind, and respectful toward themselves. And I’ve found the simple act of daily affirmations can help me to achieve this.
My Daily Affirmations
I know what you’re thinking, because I’ve felt the same way: isn’t this “manifesting” stuff just a bunch of new-age nonsense? But this method isn’t some magic cure-all. It’s establishing truth about ourselves.
As writers, we understand the great power words have. We can use them to berate ourselves or build ourselves up. Here is a list of affirmations I say to myself every day, and perhaps a few of these will resonate with you.
- I am a writer.
- My successes and failures do not define me, but help me to grow.
- I can live the life I want to live.
- I am allowed to be happy.
- Doing by best means taking regular breaks and regenerating my energy.
- There is no upper limit to my success.
- There is enough time to do everything I want to do in this life.
- I am on an equal playing field with all other creators.
Only you can establish your own truth. No one else can force you to believe anything about yourself, good or bad. And since we’re the hardest people to convince of our own talent and worth, it is crucial we take the time to reestablish these truths to ourselves every day.
Start thinking about what you can affirm to yourself as a writer. Pick three affirmations from this list, or write your own, and repeat them every day, first thing when you wake up.
When you respect yourself and recognize your own great worth, there’s no telling what you can accomplish!
