“Tell the orchestra for God’s sake to keep on playing. Dance, you jazz-mad puppets of fate, and pay no attention to me. I’m all right. Wounded? Nay, sire, I’m healthy. Oh, I’m great.”

— Dorothy Parker, “The Garter”, 1928

I’m reading Dorothy Parker for the first time (I KNOW, I KNOW). And “The Garter” — a self-deprecating, wickedly humorous, and all-around brilliant monologue — is my new favorite piece.

Read it at this vaguely dubious website. It’s short. And so very worth it.
